When you’re working at your best, you’re like what?

An ideal team for you, that would support you to work at your best, would be like what?

If this company were to be just as you’d like, it will be like what?

Once they arrived, we invited them to get into pairs, share their metaphors and ask a few questions about one another’s models. We asked them to find out what their partner’s metaphor might mean for the way they might behave at work.

During this process we observed their social interactions and looked for congruence and incongruence between what candidates said they were like and the way they actually acted with each other. We weren’t demanding that they always be congruent but when we observed incongruence and brought it to their attention we were actively selecting for people who were open to feedback and to learning about themselves rather than being defensive or manipulative.

Recruitment was an odd shift for me because so far I’d been modelling for the group’s learning and development. Now I was modelling to make predictions about people and then offer them a job, or not, based on what I was predicting. For this reason alone we were more rigorous than ever.

This was the first example of Clean Recruitment so I’ll share a couple of patterns I observed and predictions I made that meant someone didn’t get selected for a second interview.

Two candidates were interviewing one another to find out their metaphors for working at their best and to demonstrate their interview and rapport building skills.

A: When I’m working at my best I’m the early bird that catches the worm.

B: I don’t know what this metaphor means or how it’s relevant to the job.

Caitlin: (to B) Ask her some of these clarifying questions (indicating some cleanish questions on the wall) to find out a bit more about the early bird and then see if it becomes clearer.
